Ryan McDonagh said of the Capitals

Coach John Tortorella pronounced that history "irrelevant," as did several players. Some Rangers said they found the Capitals under Coach Dale Hunter to be very similar to the Senators. While the Senators and the Capitals barely made the playoffs with 92 points, both are gritty opponents who pose problems.

"They've got a lot of top-end skill guys up front, similar to Ottawa," Ryan McDonagh said of the Capitals, who eliminated the defending champion Bruins in overtime in Game 7, with the rookie goalie Braden Holtby leading the way. "They have some mobile defensemen as well, like the Senators. And their goaltender is playing pretty well, like Anderson did for Ottawa."

Brad Richards said he thought the Capitals resembled not only the Senators, but also the Rangers.
